In a review of problems facing top companies, The Insights Group found that generating revenue was believed to be one of the top ten challenges.

You may be able to generate revenue by replicating current practices or by implementing new ones. These approaches call for different styles. Insights Discovery will increase your self-awareness and can help you to employ some of the styles or working that you may not usually use.

Insights Discovery uses a four colour model, comprised of Cool Blue, Fiery Red, Earth Green and Sunshine Yellow energies, to describe people’s strengths, styles and team contributions. Everyone has all four energies, although no one is strong in all four, and the unique combination of these helps to determine why we think each and behave the way we do.

Say you are an individual that leads with Cool Blue energy – you may intuitively be able to analyse successes and find ways to duplicate these or improve on them. You may also be able to objectively identify any areas where products or services are not performing as well as hoped and need to be reduced or eliminated. A further source of revenue may be to expand into or improve on existing online selling platforms or services. You will probably have a tendency to be organised and precise, and may be suited to managing the logistics of this.

While you may naturally lead with Cool Blue energy, it may not be the energy most suited to certain situations. Everyone has all four colour energies, although no-one Is strong in all four, and you can learn to bring your other colour energies to the fore when needed. If you can learn to think with your Sunshine Yellow hat on, you could consciously focus on being more dynamic and persuasive when attending networking events or contacting potential leads, rather than approaching this with your natural persona, which may be more reserved and cautious.

“This guy’s great at finding revenue streams.”

By focussing on your Fiery Red energy, you could seek to work harder and faster, or up the ante, looking for quick wins that will bring in immediate revenue. However, to some, this could be seen as aggressive and driving, and a more creative approach might be better. Try dialling up your Sunshine Yellow energy, which could generate innovative ideas that may bring in more diverse sources of revenue.

An important factor in your ability to generate revenue could be your reputation within an industry. Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth recommendations from contemporaries and associates. Put your Earth Green Insights brick at the top of the pile and lead with an approach that concentrates on ensuring good customer service: listening to customers and supporting them, and thanking them for their business. This is an investment rather than a quick fix, helping to secure repeat business and future endorsements, but the saying is true – it’s easier (and less expensive) to hang on to an old customer than it is to gain a new one.
